The Barnes and Cézanne

The Barnes Foundation invites you to join Nina Athanassoglou-Kallmyer, a professor emerita of art history at the University of Delaware. Nina is a renowned expert on Paul Cézanne and French nineteenth-century art and culture, particularly known for her book  "Cézanne and Provence: The Painter in His Culture". This trip is Part II of the circles study trip experience. Part I is in the Barnes collection galleries this September led by Nina Kallmyer. The in-house portion is "included" and complimentary but strongly suggested for any participants.  She will lead us on an exciting trip to Provence filled with the scenic landscapes that inspired Paul Cézanne throughout his career. Cézanne was a French Post-Impressionist painter and a leading figure in the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements. Often called the "father of modern painting." Both Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso are said to have remarked that Cézanne "is the father of us all." His work influenced the development of 20th century art movements, particularly Cubism. Cézanne's paintings are known for his innovative use of color, line, and form, and his analytical still lifes. In Aix-en-Provence we will discover Cézanne's landscape motifs along five marked trails from the city center. They lead to Le Tholonet, the Jas de Bouffan, the Bibémus quarry, the banks of the River Arc and Les Lauves workshop. September is a wonderful time to visit Provence and we hope you will join us on this exciting trip!

Highlights of the Trip Include:

  • Private curator-guided tour of Provence's Château La Coste a wine estate, with exquisite art, architecture and restaurants.
  • Visits to historical monuments including Jas de Bouffan mansion and its park, the former home of Paul Cézanne.

The mansion saw the artist blossom for 40 years, from his first experimental drawings in the Grand Salon to creating his masterpieces. zanne painted a whole host of pieces here, such as still lifes, portraits and landscapes. The property itself, including its buildings and grounds, inspired 36 oil paintings and 17 watercolours. He also painted his famous artwork, The Card Players, in the manor between 1890 and 1895.

The most famous paintings have been painted from this wonderful panorama, located on the chemin de la Marguerite (Margaret way) on the Lauves' hill.
