Frieze Week in New York City
The Contemporary Austin is pleased to offer its patrons a four-day art-packed experience in New York City! Join sharon maidenberg, Ernest and Sarah Butler Executive Director & CEO, who will lead this trip with Alex Klein, Head Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs. Accompanying this trip will be Lauren Kaplan, an art educator at Artful Jaunts with a BA in History and Art History from Columbia University and a PhD in Art History from The Graduate Center, City University of New York. She specializes in both contemporary art and architecture.
Our trip starts on Wednesday, May 1, please meet us in the lobby by 2 pm. We will have VIP access to the Frieze New York preview at The Shed. Our curator-led tour will take us through some of the most exciting and innovative art from across the globe and give you the opportunity to learn about the impact of artists at different stages of their careers. We will visit the Gochman private collection of contemporary Indigenous artists, including Nicholas Galanin and Jeffery Gibson. Gibson is the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States at this year's Venice Biennale. On our second day, we will attend the Lubaina Himid opening at Greene Naftali, where we will be joined by Director Eleonore Hugendubel. Lubaina a self-described painter and black activist is a pioneer of the 80's Black Arts movement and worked to create spaces for other Black artists. The trip will also include a tour through highlights of the 2024 Whitney Biennial and two artist studio visits, including a visit to Ann Craven's studio in Tribeca. Our lunches and dinners will be at art-connected locations. Including Hav & Mar, a vibrant seafood house from Chef Marcus Samuelsson located in the renowned arts district of Chelsea, NYC. It also features site-specific artwork by Brooklyn-based artist Derrick Adams. Our final dinner together will be a surprise, not to be missed! On our last day, we will have a curator-led tour of Giants at the Brooklyn Museum by Dr. Kimberli Gant, curator of modern and contemporary art, and former curatorial fellow at The Contemporary Austin. The trip will finish with lunch and a studio visit in Brooklyn.
We will stay at The Ned NoMad, a five-star hotel with a stunning women-focused art collection. After the first location opened in London in 2017, it was only a matter of time before a New York outpost was created. This hotel and private club hybrid provide a truly unique experience. Housed in a Beaux-Arts style structure known as The Johnston Building, it was built in 1903 as a store and office. The interiors are designed and directed by the Soho House Design team, inspired by the existing Beaux-Arts style. The attention to detail is impeccable and it will feel like stepping back in time.
